Fishing For White Catfish…

White cats can be found in streams, river sloughs and back waters, reservoirs, ponds, and even drainage ditches.

White cats are diverse, opportunistic feeders. So the baits you can use can be pretty diverse too. If it is oily or smells, use it. For live baits, use grasshoppers, minnows, worms, shrimp, crayfish, crickets, and night crawlers. BUT, whites also feed well on cut fish, chicken and beef liver, chicken and beef heart, clams, and sometimes even soap.

All you need to catch a white cat is a cane pole or rod and reel (spin cast or level wind makes no difference). A one ounce or greater slip sinker and hook works for bottom fishing, or if you want to get elaborate, a three-way swivel rig. To fish off the bottom, use a float or cork and hook with a light weight. Always try to fish on or near the bottom.

Since whites feed opportunistically, you should fish that way too. Put out several poles or rods, each with a different bait. It should keep you busy if the cats are there. If you have no bites in 15 to 20 minutes? MOVE!

One article I read said the best time to fish for whites is early morning, late afternoon, evening , and night. WHAT’S LEFT?

Whites sometimes bite softly. It is best to keep the line tight so you can always feel the bite. They are experts at stealing your bait.
