Description:
A
visitor center, butterfly garden, observation platform and covered walkway
overlook the brackish water of Moore’s Creek near its confluence with the
Indian River Lagoon. The center is open October – June. During the
winder months, the manatees are attracted to the warmer water outflow from
the Fort Pierce Utilities Authority generating plant.
Watchable Wildlife:
As many as 30 manatees have been spotted here at one time during very cold
weather. In general, the first few days following cold fronts offer the best
manatee viewing. Mullet, tarpon, and other fish are often seen, as well as
bottlenose dolphins playing at the mouth of the short creek. Brown pelicans,
gulls and terns loaf nearby. Colorful plantings attract a variety of
butterflies.

Directions:
From I-95 (exit 65) or the Turnpike (exit 152), go east on Okeechobee Road
to Virginia Avenue. Travel east to U.S. 1 and turn north (left). Turn right
onto Orange Avenue, cross over the railroad track and turn left onto Indian
River Drive. Head north, go through the roundabout and watch for The Manatee
Center on the right.
