Description: This is a small historical park that features a wealth of natural habitats, including open beach, dunes, maritime hammock, scrub, marsh, and inlet. A ferry is available to take visitors to the fort on Rattlesnake Island. There is a short boardwalk nature trail. Watchable wildlife: Cooper's hawks nest here, ospreys occur year-round, and bald eagles are common during winter and spring. Wood storks and roseate spoonbills are seen periodically, but several other species of wading birds, as well as brown pelicans, double-crested cormorants, and belted kingfishers can be seen almost any time. The parking area is a good place to search for scrub jays. Check the sandbars just south of the park entrance for gulls, terns, and black skimmers. Ownership: National Park Service Contact: |
