August 2008

August 5, Tuesday 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.  Chinsegut Lichen Walk by Dr. Dana Griffin.  Join us as we learn about the unique lichens at Chinsegut.

August 15, Friday 8:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.  Big Pine Night Walk.  Meet at Big Pine on the Old Crystal River Road.  Bring a flashlight and insect repellent.

August 23, Saturday 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.  Introductory Archery Workshop.  The Commission will provide the equipment.  Please pre-register.

September 2008

September 12, Friday 6:00 -8:00 p.m.  Incredible Edibles.  Bring a place setting to sample from our wild plant and game demonstrations.  Pre-registration is required.

September 16, Tuesday 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.  Backpacking with Jim Garrison.  Learn the basic elements of backpacking and camping as we come into the fall.  Indoor and outdoor demonstrations.

September 20, Saturday 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.  Chinsegut Butterfly Workshop with Marc Minno.  Bring a pair of binoculars and butterfly field guide if you have them.

September 30, Tuesday 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.  Big Pine Fall Wildflower and Butterfly Walk.  Meet at the Big Pine Tract on the Old Crystal River Road.

October 2008

October 11, Saturday,  9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Reptile and Amphibian Festival.  Join us for reptile and amphibian exhibits, walks, talks and demonstrations.  Door prizes, puppet show, and a large Florida amphibian and reptile indoor exhibit as well as regularly scheduled walks and talks by experts through out the day.  In-service credit may be available for educators

October 14, Tuesday, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.  Janet Butterfield Brooks Preserve Wildflower and Butterfly Walk.  Meet at the Preserve parking lot at the intersection of C.R. 491/Bailey Hill Road.   Bring your binoculars and field guides if you have them.

October 18, Saturday, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Junior butterfly watching workshop.  Join us for a butterfly workshop for kids 16 years and younger.  Children under the age of seven must be accompanied by an adult.  We will learn some of the common  butterflies and observed them in their natural habitat.

October 21, Tuesday, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Florida's coastal shorebirds and seabirds.  Join us for a seaside slide show with the Commission's Shorebird Partnership Coordinator, Chris Burney.

November 2008

November 1, Saturday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Pioneer Day.  Living arts demonstration of the past.  Step back in time and experience hand-cranked ice cream, broom making, lumber jack demonstration, spinning, horse-drawn wagon rides, butter churning, rope making, open hearth cooking, archery exhibit and much more ….In-service credit may be available for educators.

November 8, Saturday, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Birding 101.  Introductory birding class for all ages.  Bring a pair of binoculars and birding field guide if you have them.

November 13, Thursday, 10 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Pine needle craft class.  Join us as make holiday decorations out of long leaf pine needles.

November 15, Saturday, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Introduction to geocaching.  Join staff and Chinsegut volunteers as we learn the sport of geocaching from using GPS units to finding geocaches.

December 2008

December 9, Tuesday, 7 - 8:30 p.m. Wild turkeys in Florida.  Join us for a slide show and call demonstration with the Commission's Upland Gamebird Research Biologist, Roger Shields.

December 11, Thursday, 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Black bear workshop for educators.  Black bear curriculum workshop for all educators.  In-service credit may be available for educators.

December 12, Friday, 6:30 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. Chinsegut night walk.  Bring a flashlight and insect repellent.

December 13, Saturday, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Introductory archery workshop.  The Commission will supply the equipment. Please pre-register.
