Implementing a Recycling Network
How to start a monofilament (fishing line) recycling program
There are 2 potential components to a fishing line recycling program:
Indoor Bins (Cardboard)
The cardboard recycling containers are available at no cost from
Pure Fishing (the parent company of Berkley) by calling
Karen Afinson at 877-777-3850 ext. 8419.
These bins are approximately 3 feet in height, 17 inches wide and
17 inches deep. The display holds 2 cardboard boxes; one for
fishing line and the other for spools. Both boxes have UPS
postage-paid labels. When they are full, they may be sealed
and picked up by UPS for shipping back to Pure Fishing in
Iowa for recycling. The best locations for these boxes are
tackle shops and marinas. Pure Fishing is willing to send
out quantities of these to individuals who are starting
recycling programs.
Outdoor Bins (PVC)
The outdoor (PVC) stations are made of PVC pipe. You may construct your own or
obtain bins from the FWC for
Florida programs while supplies are available.
If you construct your own bins, use the
Bin Materials List and the
Bin Construction Instructions so that your bins will be similar in appearance to existing
bins.
For large installations or complete program start up, please view the
Recycling Network document which details information about the sources and materials that
were used to start a program in North East Florida.
Outdoor Bin Stickers and Signs
There are 5 different vinyl stickers and a metal sign that
can be used on each bin. The two round logo stickers are being
used to maintain consistency with other monofilament recycling
programs in the state. Stickers may be obtained from the FWC for
Florida programs and for non-Florida programs they may be
purchased by making a donation. For
large installations or complete program start-up, you may
purchase quantities of most of these stickers from the vendors
in the
Recycling Network document or you can download the
sticker logos
for a local vendor of your choice to reprint.
Signs that accompany bins are generally 12" x 18" (vinyl or
metal) and read:
Keep Our Waterways Tangle-Free
Recycle Your Fishing Line Responsibly
They may also display logos of program contributors.
Order Signs for the Florida MRRP
Other location-specific signs that may accompany bins may
also be seen throughout Florida. Examples include:
Outdoor Bin Signs
Signs can be purchased through the PRIDE program, which is a
program through the prison system in Florida (1-800-443-7601;
see http://www.pridefl.com/).
100 signs cost $225 (they are 12" x 18" vinyl signs with white
letters on blue background).
Bin Upkeep
The stations are emptied by volunteers (about every 2-4 weeks);
the line is taken to one of the locations that has a cardboard
recycling box. Volunteers complete a data sheet each time they
check on the station (below).
The recycling bin stations are emptied by volunteers about every 2-4 weeks as necessary.
The line is cleaned and taken to one of the locations with an indoor cardboard recycling box.
Volunteers should complete a data sheet
each time they check on the station. This information should be submitted to the program
coordinator to be tallied and sent to the FWC.
