FIRST REGULATION OF PANTHER HUNTING

season closedFlorida panther was declared a game species to be taken only during deer season or as a nuisance.
Florida human population reaches 1.9 million, more than double the 1920 census.

Florida puma (Felis concolor coryi) listed as 1 of 30 subspecies of Felis concolor in North and South America and described as "A medium-sized, dark subspecies, with pelage short and stiff; skull with broad, flat frontal region; nasals remarkably broad and high arched or expanded upward." (p. 235)

whitetail deerGame Commission restocks deer population in south Florida with whitetail deer imported from Wisconsin and Texas.

1957

Audubon's Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary established.
