Description: There are many levee roads and trails for wildlife observation in this restoration site centered around nine miles of channel and surrounding wetlands of the upper Oklawaha River. Watchable wildlife: Wading birds, including glossy and white ibis, little blue and tricolored herons, and great and snowy egrets, congregate here in large numbers; a recent evening count tallied more than 3,000 individuals. Anhingas nest here in the spring, and least bitterns, black-necked stilts, and purple gallinules nest in the summer. Several species of ducks winter here, including ring-necked ducks, wood ducks, green-winged teal, blue-winged teal, buffleheads, northern shovelers, hooded mergansers, and northern pintails. The Oklawaha River basin is the winter home of more than 10,000 sandhill cranes, many of which are seen flying over Sunnyhill. Other animals you may see include black bear, river otter, and bobcat.
