Description: The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation owns 1,100 acres of sandy ridges and wetlands on Sanibel Island. There are excellent interpretive exhibits, four miles of loop trails, an observation tower, guided tours, and a native plant nursery and store. Watchable wildlife: This is a good place to watch anole lizards along paths and in underbrush, as well as gopher tortoises on the sandy ridges. Marsh rabbits feed along the trails. Look for wading birds in the wetlands, as well as for rails and mottled ducks. Ospreys nest close to the observation tower. Winter brings many songbirds to bolster the resident populations of cardinals, woodpeckers, gray catbirds, rufous-sided towhees, and Carolina wrens.
