Description: Eight plant communities, including some of the finest longleaf sandhills in Florida, occur in addition to the spring-fed Wekiwa River. Twenty-one miles of foot and horse trails wind throughout the park with two backpacking campsites. Watchable wildlife: The river is home to alligators, turtles, river otters, limpkins, white ibis, herons, egrets, and belted kingfishers. Bald eagles and ospreys are common birds of prey. Look for barred owls and pileated woodpeckers in cabbage palm-oak hammocks close to the river. Black bear, gray fox, and bobcats prowl throughout the park. When hiking through the sandhills, look for fox squirrels, gopher tortoises, and the mounds of pocket gophers. Ownership: Department of Environmental Protection Contact: |
