Description:
Three main trail loops take visitors
through this 400-acre preserve of scrub, pine forest and scattered wetlands.
The scrub is a remnant of an ancient sand dune ridge that once extended from
Ocala to Lake Wales. Active management here seeks to restore this scrub
habitat, which is home to more than 200 types of plants and animals.
Watchable Wildlife:
Habitats here
support the Florida scrub-jay, eastern towhee, sand skink, blue-tailed mole
skink, six-lined race runner, Florida scrub lizard and gopher tortoise.
Common birds include rufous-sided towhee, mourning and ground dove, and
warblers, vireos, gnatcatchers and wrens. Red-headed and red-bellied
woodpeckers are common in the pinelands. Look for wading birds and ducks in
the wetlands. Scan snags and utility lines for loggerhead shrikes.
