Description: Four miles of hiking trails and an observation tower offer visitors views of maritime hammock and salt marshes near the St. Johns River. Thirty-five acres of Timucuan shell middens add cultural significance. Native blueberries, wild coffee, snowberry, and green fly orchid are among the many plants that will interest botanically minded visitors. Watchable wildlife: Painted buntings nest in the hardwood hammock in spring and summer, in company with northern parula warblers, white-eyed and red-eyed vireos, and barred owls. Raptors such as ospreys, red-shouldered hawks, and Cooper's hawks are common. Birds attracted to the salt marshes and tidal creeks include wood storks, brown pelicans, great and snowy egrets, great blue herons, and double-crested cormorants.
