Big Bend Wildlife Management Area

Hagen's Cove

drawing of wildlife

Description:
This recreation area provides panoramic views of the pine  islands, unique natural beaches, and shallow bays of the Gulf of Mexico. Low tide exposes expanses of mud flats that host large numbers of shorebirds and wading birds. An observation tower offers great views of the surrounding area.

Watchable wildlife:
Shorebirds and wading birds remain at Hagen's Cove year-round, but their numbers and diversity are bolstered during fall and spring migration. Common birds include plovers, sandpipers, marbled godwit, willet, dunlin, short-billed dowitcher, and whimbrel. Reddish egrets sometimes linger during late summer and fall. Osprey and brown pelicans fish the surrounding waters throughout the year. Many different waterfowl species overwinter.
